These are the slides from where I based my talk. You may recognize some of these slides as I have modified them slightly throughout the years. Obviously, my slides don’t fully represent my talk as I always use them just to provide me with talking points, but they should give you an idea of what I talked about in my pitching bloggers talk. I also refer people to my Pitch Me page quite frequently.

My friend and colleague Dr. Kate Milberry invited me a few months ago to give a guest lecture at the University of Alberta’s Masters of Arts in Communications and Technology. Except for the fact that I was in an echo-generating room and that I forgot to wear a microphone (key whenever you give a Skype talk), I think it went well. I am my worst critic and I often times wonder if my talks were any solid or not. Call it academic skepticism. There’s always something I can improve. I have to admit, though, that the feedback I’ve received for all of 2012 in terms of keynotes and guest lectures has been fantastic, so maybe there’s that to account for.

I don’t have time right now to Storify the wonderful tweets of feedback generated from my talk, but here are the slides that I used to guide me throughout. You may recognize some of those slides as I used them as the basis for my Social Media Camp Victoria 2011 talk on Reputation Management and Digital Identity. They’re not exactly identical as I added some context on digital branding, online footprints and professional/personal selves.

You may remember that I co-authored an e-book with my good friend Arieanna Schweber (Active Mama) on building robust online communities. As we both have accumulated years of experience blogging, in the e-book we focused primarily on building community using your blog as a base. Last year we thought of expanding the e-book and constructing a database of case studies of specific industries, for the paper version of our book (which we are still considering, though that book has been a bit delayed due to other commitments).

One of the ways in which I sharpen my thinking and test my new ideas is by creating a new talk, and this is a completely new one, that I was asked to give at the International Association of Business Communicators British Columbia Chapter (IABC/BC) Media Tour on April 17th. When I was invited to speak at the media tour, I started thinking about what could I talk about that would be new and fresh. I have spent the last 6 years of my life strengthening a community around my blog, and with the emergence of Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus, I’ve focused on those three platforms. But I have noticed an increasing trend in the use of other social platforms such as Pinterest, Instagram and Foursquare. And I figured that the best way to offer fresh ideas is to explore newer platforms and their uses.

While there’s still a lot to be seen (and said) about the big four social platforms (Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus, and I usually include blogs here), I’m interested in exploring the potential of Foursquare, Instagram and Pinterest to build communities. This talk will give an overview of basic online community building techniques (much like what Arieanna and I presented at Northern Voice 2011 and what I spoke on at WordCamp Victoria 2012) but will expand by proposing ways in which we can grow and strengthen our online communities via Pinterest, Instagram and Foursquare). I will show a few case studies of interesting ways in which each platform is being used by brands and draw attention to potential challenges that each platform poses for community building.

My lunch time talk will take place on Tuesday April 17th in the context of the IABC/BC Media Tour. You can register via the URL provided (and from what I hear the event is almost sold out!)

As it usually happens with me, the fall always gets busy. So here’s a few places where I will be speaking:

At Freelance Camp Vancouver 2011 (September 10th, 2011), I will be speaking on my 6 Key Elements to Thriving and Managing Myself as a Project.

At Social Media Camp Vancouver 2011 (September 19th, 2011 and September 22nd, 2011), I will be speaking on Pitching Bloggers/Influencers (Social Media Blogging Summit) and Public Policy 2.0 (Government Summit).

I can’t recall where else I’ve been invited, but I’ll definitely let you know where I speak next!

The second of my stops in my whirlwind crazy conference speaking circuit was Social Media Camp Victoria 2011 (in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia). For some reason, my talks and keynotes here in Victoria are (for the most part) wildly successful. With the exception of once (last SMCV10 where people thought my talk was too academic), I’ve always had resounding successes.

The highlight of the conference for me, I will have to selfishly admit, was (in addition to Derek K. Miller winning the Most Inspiring Social Media User ‘Westie’ Award) realizing how much more I have matured as a speaker. Admittedly, this is my job, right? I’m an educator. I teach, speak and give keynotes and talks for a living. Yet I knew I needed to refine my presentation skills. I procured the help of Janice Tomich (Calculated Presentations). Janice has been working with me for the past few months on both sides – academic talks and social media talks.

And yes, my delivery is improving dramatically. I noticed in the way I led both of my talks, the first one that I shared with Janni Aragon, and the second one on my own, on a topic I know well but that could be dry – reputation management and digital identity. And another highlight is – the friendships I maintain online stay alive just as well when we see each other offline.

Overall, it was a wonderful conference. I felt again amongst friends, and I tested a few ideas that I had wanted to explore in the field of social media. Congratulations and thanks to Paul Holmes, Chris Burdge, Yukari Peerless, Katharine Holmes and the hordes of amazing volunteers, sponsors and attendees.

Ah, the re-tweet (RT). That good ol’ friend. I would say “long time, no see” but truthfully, I can’t stay that. My stuff gets re-tweeted all the time, and I am extremely grateful for that. That people will think of my stuff relevant enough to share it with their own networks makes me happy. The way I have thought about retweets has evolved quite a lot, though. I am pretty sure that’s this evolution is result of the fact that my 5th year of blogging is soon over (April 2011) and that I have thought about this topic quite a lot.

In my two most recent speaking engagements in the field of social media (WordCamp Fraser Valley and the Canadian Public Relations Society Student Chapter in Vancouver Social Media 101), I indicated that one of the easiest, fastest and best ways to contribute to building your own community online was retweeting people’s stuff. I often do that, intermingling my own tweets (pre-scheduled, for the most part) with retweeting stuff from other individuals.

But the interesting thing is, not everybody thinks this way. The reason why I retweet what I read, mostly, is because either (a) I find it valuable (b) I agree with it and/or (c) I think there’s a reason to share it with my broader network. I retweet Translink’s stuff because my own online network is fairly large and well connected. I would (and probably will) do the same for the Vancouver Police Department (which is now on Twitter, and YouTube – and apparently Second Life?).

I look for ways to make my relationships bidirectional, and I think retweeting other people’s stuff is one way. But some folks might disagree with me. What is YOUR take on retweeting?

Davies (Peak Communications) and Dale Tournemille (Coast Capital Savings) to be part of a speed-dating-style series of roundtables (four in total) where we spoke with recent graduates, students and other PR and communications professionals on what we know in Social Media, giving tips and sharing our experiences.

As someone who is an academic and an educator but at the same time a power user of social media, I felt it was important that I volunteer my time to this type of events, because it is by spreading my thinking on social media to other folks that I’ll be able to enhance and further the field (a goal of mine since I arrived into the social media scene in Vancouver).

You can read tweets associated with our conversations by following the hashtag CPRS101SM on Twitter. I will try to do a series of screencaptures as I know that tweets are rather ephemeral and I did not live-blog the event (as I was speaking). I hope everyone found our insights useful! And thanks Nick Seliwoniuk for the invite.

As I review my Calendar to update it with my speaking engagements in the upcoming month, I just realized these are the talks I will be giving in the next few weeks. If you attend any of these, please make sure you introduce yourself. I really enjoy knowing the people behind the Twitter accounts!

May 7th – Panel at Northern Voice 2010 – Government 2.0: Politics, Policy and Social Media in Canada: A Multi-Level Exploration – Friday May 7th, 2010 from 10:30am to 11:30am at the UBC Life Sciences Centre building. David Eaves moderates, with Ian Capstick (MediaStyle), Tanya Twynstra (BC Government) and Andrea Reimer (City of Vancouver Councillor) and yours truly (UBC/CIELAP/HB Strategies).

May 15th – Panel at WordCamp Victoria 2010, with Rebecca Bollwitt (Miss604) and Lorraine Murphy (Raincoaster) on Blogging and WordPress. I’ll be giving a talk as well. My talk title is: WordPress for Professional and Personal Blogging: Two Approaches, One Site Building Platform.

May 17th – Panel w Tris Hussey (A View from the Isle). Part of the WordPress Mastermind Series, this is Number 4: How Come No One is Reading My Blog? Get Traffic. Tris and I will be sharing our thoughts on how you can grow your traffic using WordPress.

May 29th – Workshop Leader and Speaker at FreelanceCamp Vancouver 2010. I will be leading a workshop on “Freelance is Not Free” (by now, probably my trademark!). This workshop will be focused on how to value our freelancing services and strategies to maximize value for our clients and ourselves. Fore more information, follow @604freelancers on Twitter.

Given how many courses I teach every term you would think I wouldn’t even want to give talks anymore. But you know what, I think that it’s good for me as a warm up for the summer academic conference/speaking circuit. Plus, if you got it, you share it (the mantra of Social Media Club).

Most of those who follow me on Twitter on either of my social media/personal and/or my research accounts may know that I’ve spent a substantial amount of 2008 giving a lot of talks about social media, online community building and how to further your message using social networking sites. This is something I will continue to do in 2010. However, I have realized that I miss the academic conference circuit, and since I’m almost done with my water governance book, I have decided that for 2010, in addition to teaching two university level courses, continuing my academic research, my consulting (both in environment and public policy and in social media), and my business coaching, I want to do more environmental and public policy-focused talks (open to the public).

I find that I have a lot of fun when I speak about what I study, and as I mentioned in my post on the Reading is Sexy calendar, I plan to read a short excerpt of my forthcoming book on water governance. If you’re interested to hear me

I don’t have the time to publish a crib of my talk, may do that sometime soon, but not now. Enjoy! Comments always welcome, of course.

I am always amazed by how incredibly welcoming the social media community in British Columbia has been to me. Recently, I volunteered myself (only half-jokingly) to be the speaker at the Social Media Club gathering in Victoria (British Columbia). Catherine Novak (WordSpring) took my offer to heart and now it is official. On May 26th, 2009, I will be crossing the pond and going over to the capital of beautiful British Columbia to speak about “Using Social Media for Social Change: Towards an Action-Based Agenda“. I am incredibly honored because I have had the pleasure of meeting Chris Heuer (Chairman, Co-Founder of Social Media Club). I am also honored because Colleen Coplick invited me to be part of SMC 604.

Basically, the abstract of my talk will be the following:

The fact that we live in a networked society where the boundaries between public and private have blurred is no mystery to anyone. I have been interested in the behavior of networks for almost a decade. Recently, I have begun an action-focused research agenda trying to understand how we can use social marketing AND social media at the intersection of public policy issues, environmental affairs and more recently, de-stigmatization of mental health.

In this presentation, I want to push the social media for social change agenda further. I’d like to challenge the participants to join me in a brainstorming session to delineate what the future of social networking, social media and social marketing is and how all these elements interact with each other and strengthen our capabilities to effect social change in the world. We need to stop ‘thinking’ so much and start ‘acting’ much more. I will challenge my audience to join me in this movement towards an action-based agenda for social media for social change.
