Festival Internacional Cervantino 2012 (Guanajuato, Guanajuato) #MexMonday
Ever since I was a little child, my parents would bring me to the colonial city of Guanajuato, home to the Festival Internacional Cervantino (International Cervantes Festival). El Cervantino, as it’s affectionately known, is (in my opinion) Latin America’s foremost cultural showcase. Created to honor Spaniard writer, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, El Cervantino is an amazing cultural party.
The Festival Internacional Cervantino (popularly known as El Cervantino) takes place each fall in the city of Guanajuato, located in central Mexico. This is a small colonial-era city with history of having a large cultural scene. The origins of the festival are from the mid 20th century, when short plays by Miguel de Cervantes called “entremeses” were performed in the city’s plazas. In 1972, this was expanded with federal support to include more events to add a more international flavor. Since then, FIC has grown to become the most important international artistic and cultural event in Mexico and Latin America, and one of four major events of its type in the world. It is a member of the European Festivals Association and the Asian Association of Theater Festivals. In addition to government support, there are also private sponsors such as Telmex, Televisa and Microsoft.
This year, amazingly, I’m going to be in Mexico for the first time in decades at the same time as the Festival Internacional Cervantino, and most likely, I will be in attendance. My parents and brothers and I would often make travel plans so that we could enjoy ballet, classical music, or theatrical performances. I know for a fact that many international visitors come to Guanajuato to the Festival Internacional Cervantino. At the same time, many of the performing acts are international in nature.
The Festival Internacional Cervantino 2012 runs from October 3rd to the 21st, in the city of Guanajuato. If you are planning to come visit, you should start making your travel plans now as hotels fill up really quickly.
