The Union Bar (Strathcona/Chinatown)
I had the pleasure of visiting The Union Bar with my good friend Jason Sanders a few weeks back. As you know, I’m not very much of a fan of some types of fusion food/drinks/cocktails, but the Filipino-South-East-Asian cocktails that The Union Bar serves are definitely some of the best cocktails I have had in this town, and while they are on the medium-to-higher end of prices, I can safely tell you that they are some of the best cocktails that I have had in a long while. I also loved how spacious the room is, how friendly the staff is, and how (despite not having reservation), it was full without being insanely crowded.
Close to the Skytrain station Main Street/Science World, in the heart of Chinatown, The Union Bar is proving once more than you can have a successful business in Strathcona without destroying the nice vibe of the neighbourhood. I will not comment on the actual food, even though from where I was standing, the food was just as equally delicious, and the prices weren’t to break the bank. I will definitely come back to The Union Bar. I visited a second time when my friend Lorraine Murphy bought me a drink there and it was just spectacular. I also had the chance to meet the lovely Deb Williams (of Mom is The Word fame). Amazing, what the people in Strathcona have in their neighbourhood. There’s a number of interesting hangouts to check out.
Disclosure: I was a guest of Jason’s for the evening so drinks were on his tab. We did not receive any special treatment at The Union Bar, nor did we expect it. As always I retain full editorial control over anything published on my site.
