El Trompo (Kensington Market, Chinatown, Toronto)
There is A LOT of Mexican restaurants in Toronto. I didn’t know this until I went and visited!
The last night I spent in Toronto, I went bar-hopping with Ryan Taylor, Karim Bardeesy (both good friends of Meghan Warby, my lovely host in the T-Dot) and Meghan. The first Mexican restaurant we bumped into was “El Trompo”. I was pretty impressed with the variety of restaurants I came across while walking down Augusta Avenue (in Kensington Market, Chinatown).
The guacamole was absolutely authentic, and the rest of the food (and drinks) were absolutely stellar. And not surprising: El Trompo is owned and staffed by Mexican nationals. I actually ordered everyone’s foods and drinks in Spanish, which was kind of neat. I’ll definitely pay a return visit to El Trompo next time I am in Toronto, for sure.

I used to like el trompo a lot. Now it’s an average on my list. Their guac and condiments still rock but last two times I was there, the tacos were dry, soup too salty and drinks were made out of pre-mixed artificial flavours. I mean, seriously. Store bought margarita mix should have no place in a mexican joint. How difficult is to squeeze limes and shake it?
