I have a 1gb data plan ($30/mo) and never really notice the impact - my total data consumption rarely goes over 200gb/month even with tethering. * by "all the time" I mean regularly, but not for long periods of time. Also, I don't do system updates, watch lots of video, that sort of thing. But I do use skype, which works well. Essentially, it is a portable high speed modem - better than "lite" adsl or cable service but not like a campus or office connection. I tether all the time* with my iPhone.
