Timeraiser Vancouver [upcoming event]
Robert Putnam has written extensively about the decline of social capital and civic engagement. While his research has primarily examined American society, Professor Putnam would probably want to look at Canada and the Timeraiser events as a powerful method to re-engage citizens in an era mired by social disengagement. Last night, I was amongst a select group of people who were invited to the media launch of Timeraiser Vancouver, along with Gus, Emme and Cathy. Exquisite catering was provided by Subeez. Honestly, I really can’t remember the last time I was at Subeez, because I’ve been more of a fan of its cousin Wazzubee (on Commercial Drive). The catering and drinks were excellent as was the customer service.
On September 24th, participants in the Timeraiser Vancouver event (registration tickets are $20) will be bidding volunteer hours to try and win local artist’s artwork. I had the pleasure of talking to a few of the artists (one of them, coincidentally, is a good friend of my friend Miranda Sam), and they shared their views about the event. While you might be surprised at the fact that admission is charged for, the event itself is a very worthy cause and the admission goes to paying for rental expenses, etc. The event is for a great cause and the artists are all local (check the gallery).I will be giving away two tickets to the September 24 event (a $40 value) to a lucky reader. I will be drawing the winner on September 23rd at 2pm. You can drop a comment detailing some of your volunteer experience here, and you’ll be entered into the draw.

Ah yes, volunteering…I often overwhelm myself with volunteering, be it local committees for Planning related conferences, the Canadian Cancer society, mentoring future planners at UBC, and throwing my hat into the ring of any good cause.
I wouldn’t know a life without volunteering. Currently involved with Twestival Victoria, Social Media Club Victoria, a local neighbourhood group, a local community day celebration planning committee, and the Vancouver Island Women’s Business Network, as well as the Victoria Francophone Society.
I’m planning to go anyway, but free tix would be lovely. I volunteer with Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association, a registered non-profit that looks after feral cats and spays/neuters them, and gives kittens to loving homes. I spend my weekends looking after over 40 cats, feeding & cleaning up after them.
I’d love to have you as one of our volunteers at ISSofBC Mentoring Connections program. I promise you’ll enjoy it!
Say hi to Catherine at ISSofBC booth!
Take care,
